Ryan Law’s focus is on resolving state and local tax (SALT) controversies as well as advising clients on tax planning and compliance issues. Offices are located in Austin, Chicago, Dallas, and Washington, D.C. The firm’s partners have many decades of broad and diverse experience in SALT and are assisted by a team of skilled associates and paralegals.
The mission of the firm is to resolve disputes and issues in a collaborative manner that strives to exceed our client’s expectations. We work with our clients, and often with other tax professionals, with the goal of efficient representation that leverages our relationships and technology. Because of the firm’s focus on SALT, we generally do not face the conflicts and other issues that can hinder SALT service delivery in a large full service law firm. We believe our clients’ experiences working with our team are special because of our backgrounds and the firm’s exclusive devotion to SALT.
The firm’s three main practice areas are sales tax, property tax, and income/franchise tax. The firm is strong in all three of these areas. For example, the firm merged with a property tax firm, John Brusniak and Associates, and has been rapidly adding property tax lawyers.
Our lawyers have handled numerous matters involving the other tax types besides sales, property and income tax. A few examples include: insurance tax, unclaimed property, hotel occupancy tax, and motor fuels tax.
Our lawyers are very active in speaking on tax issues at local and national conferences and in serving in leadership roles in SALT organizations, as their bios reflect. We are proud of our record of success in handling large, complex SALT matters.
The core of our skill set is effective litigation of disputes at the audit/appraisal district, administrative, trial, and appellate levels in a strategic manner that emphasizes creative advocacy grounded in relentless preparation and research.
